rare - R&J Beck ltd. ,model-'Frena'-1901 box camera

Introducing -A Rare and Genuinely Victorian Antique    R&J BECK “FRENA”  Box Camera.

This rare camera is a true Victorian antique, dating from approximately 1898-1901, and in full working order (although the accuracy of the shutter has not been tested).

Also known as a “Detective” camera, it is fitted with film plates with notched edges (2 5/8 X 3 1/2 inches), which are released one at a time when the “swan-neck” changing handle is turned. (See photos).

The changing handle is signed “R & J Beck”, and the spirit level still works!

All leathers are intact with signs of use, and the carrying handle is in good shape. 

 For those interested, “FRENA” was supposed to stand for :- “For Rapidly Exposing Negatives Automatically”

An unique camera, very much of its time, and still capable of conjuring up images of Sherlock Holmes and the foggy gaslit streets of Victorian London.
