This busy Manhattan Scene is an original Watercolor on mounted paper by the listed and accomplished Modernist Emil John Hess (1913-2003). This piece was most likely done on location during the daily deliveries of the world known New York Times to the local vendors. This is one of the many overlooked to the point of secrecy routines that keep the big grungy apple running and inspired the artist so. Hess's aesthetic and subject matter has recently been taken up by such contemporary art hot shots as Daniel Richter, Peter Doig and others, some 50 years since Hess revealed it to the world. Gestural and hectic, the artist's work has also challenged the strict divisions between painting and drawing and reside somewhere in between! Hess's technique - bright washes, unrestricted line work by now have earned a staple position in contemporary painting vocabulary, and rightfully so. Born in 1913, Hess lived & worked primarily in New York City, where he died sometime around 2002 or 2003. He is most well-known for painting scenes of New York, such as: Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, Times Square New Year's Eve, wild dancing people in rapture, New York OTB locales, modern sculpture and famous race horses. Some of his exhibits include New York's Metropolitan Museum, MoMa and Betty Parsons Gallery.
