First a bit of history. The ten-chapter serial HAWK OF THE HILLS premiered in theaters in August of 1927. The story had all the earmarks of the genre, including daring cavalry rescues, gold robbers and a beautiful white girl being burned at the stake by savage redskins. A year later, the same studio that produced the serial re-edited the chapters into a motion picture in an effort to profit from the same film, especially to those who did not attend the theaters to see all 10 chapters.

Sadly, the 10 chapter serial is considered "lost" and is not known to exist. Neither UCLA or the Library of Congress has the serial chapters. So what is contained on this DVD is the movie version that happens to be all that remains of the serial. And gives us a great idea of what the serial was about. (Since some people can't stand watching a 10-chapter silent serial but don't mind watching the movie version, this is the next best thing anyway.)

So settle back and enjoy a good action-packed thriller and relish over the fact that you now get to see a piece of "lost" American cinema!
