Grover Washington, Jr. was an accomplished jazz saxophonist who found his niche in smooth jazz in the 1980s. Together with David Sanborn one of the founders of this slick, funky, and poppy style of jazz, Washington continues to sell impressive numbers of CDs even after his untimely 1999 death.
On 1989's TIME OUT OF MIND features Washington at his best. His velvety, passionate saxophone solos float effortlessly over the largely synthesized music. Bluesy and soulful improvisations are delivered on each track. His playing is especially effective on "Don't Take Your Love from Me," and "Split Second (Act II, The Bar Scene)." Each track on this romantic album serves as a vehicle for Washington's saxophone playing, although Phyllis Hyman turns in a sultry vocal performance on "Sacred Kind of Love."
