| Album notes | |
| Producers include: Scott Litt (track 1); Michael Beinhorn (track 6); Butch Vig (track 14). Compilation producer: Robert Margouleff. Engineers include: Joe Hadlock (track 6). Compilation engineer: Brant S. Biles. Includes liner notes by John May. Principally recorded and mixed on Greenpeace's solar-powered Mobile Solar Generator at various venues throughout the U.S. The funds raised from ALTERNATIVE NRG will be used to support Greenpeace International's Energy & Climate Campaign, whose goal it is to eliminate the world's fundamental dependence upon fossil fuels. All of the tracks on Alternative NRG were recorded on solar-powered equipment -- it's a gimmick, because without the ploy no one would be interested in this hodgepodge of live tracks from mainstream alternative groups, including R.E.M., U2, James, Midnight Oil, Soundgarden, and UB40. While of the tracks are of interest to hardcore fans, any casual listener will find the endless series of passable live tracks somewhat tedious; only R.E.M.'s funked-up version of "Drive" stands out from the pack. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | |

| 4 Stars - Excellent - ...much of the music on this compilation is cautionary--and has the cacophonus fury of a train wreck.... Rolling Stone (05/19/1994) | |
