Our Cover: Pennsylvania Zouave, 1864, by Frederic Ray, CWTI Art Director. The uniform of this corporal of the 155th Pennsylvania Regiment is based upon photos and descriptions in "Under the Maltese Cross", the regimental history. The Maltese Cross, the badge of the Fifth Corps, was worn on the left breast of the Zouave jacket.

Back Cover: "Union Refugees" by sculptor John Rogers (1829-1904). This plaster group exhibited at the 38th exhibition of the National Academy of Design represents a Tennessee family driven from their home by "Southern persecution." Rogers produced many of these sculptured groups during the Civil War and they achieved great popularity with the public. They stand as valuable records of American life and taste of the period. This engraving was published in "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" in 1863.

This issue price marked 1.00; 50 pages; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Minor shelf wear, bumped edges, foxing/soiling;  o/w good condition.
