CHARLES DICKENS
1812-1870
An Anthology
chosen and annotated by Lola L. Szladits
". . . striking.... delightful . . . a lavish number of engravings and illustrations .... should have a strong appeal for lovers of Dickensiana."
-Publishers' Weekly
"... some of Dickens' best letters interspersed with apt extracts from his own books and the books of various scholars, together with bridging comments by the compiler. Lavishly illustrated...."
- LondonTimes Literary Supplement
More than one hundred items from The New York Public Library's Berg Collection, which houses one of the most complete and famous treasuries of Dickens memorabilia in the world, are reproduced in this book, several of them in facsimile. Included are manuscript fragments, autograph letters and first editions: documents pertaining to Dickens as theatrical manager, actor, and playwright: playbills of his novels turned into plays and those plays whose leads he acted. In all there is a striking miscellany of old photographs and mementos.
Dr. Szladits' biographical annotations admirably supplement Dickens' texts and place them in the context of his time.
Dr. Lola L. Szladits has been Curator of the Berg Collection since 1969. She joined the staff of The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library in 1955. Previously, Dr. Szladits served as a librarian at the Courtauld Institute in London, at the New York Academy of Medicine, and the National Health Council Library. She is a contributor to the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of World Art.
