The Dark at the Top of the Stairs by Inge, William    New York: Random House. 1958.  First Edition, FIRST PRINTING Stated on Copyright page.  Hard Cover.  Good plus Condition.. Clean and tightly bound pages.  the covers have minor wear but are clean and tight.  The spine covering was re-glued along the cover seams since it had started to split from the binding.  The binding is tight.  Three-act play, concerning a young man"s coming of age in a small Oklahoma town in the early 1920's. Inge describes it as his 'first cautious attempt to look at the past, with an effort to find order and meaning in experiences that were once too close to see clearly.'  Dedicated to Tennessee Williams (who provides a 3-page introduction).

William Inge was championed by Tennessee Williams, and went on to be judged the most promising playwright of 1950 by the New York Drama Critics Circle. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for "Picnic." "Sheba" garnered two Tonys, one for each lead. Hollywood made films of several of his plays, introducing them to a broad national audience  This play was produced on Broadway in 1957 starring Eileen Heckart, Pat Hingle and Teresa Wright and directed by Elia Kazan. Contains three pictures from the Broadway production plus the paste-down on front. Was later (1960) made into a Hollywood film. Tennessee Williams was the first to recommend the play be produced in earlier (1947) and unpublished version titled 'Farther Off From Heaven.'
