Synopsis
The long-running and bestselling BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES series has provided a reliable selection of the year's most established and polished short fiction. This year's edition features a new series editor, Heidi Pitlor, and is guest-edited by the "king of horror," Stephen King. The inclusion of King as arbiter of literary excellence shows two recent developments: (1) the anthology's increasing acceptance of genre-fiction's significance as seen in the 2003 edition, edited by mystery-writer Walter Mosley, and in the genre-heavy selections by Michael Chabon in 2005; and (2) King's rising stature as an important contributor to American literature.
The venerable BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES series has, of late, been shifting subtly towards the mainstream in its selection of guest editors: the detective writer Walter Mosley in 2003, the great champion of genre fiction Michael Chabon in 2005. This trend reaches its apex (or nadir, depending on whom you're talking to) as Stephen King takes his role as arbitrator of literary taste in 2007. This popularizing move, as he argues in his introduction, might be a much-needed tonic for the moribund state of American short fiction. King feels that most of the stories he read "felt show-offy rather than entertaining" and were written "for editors and teachers rather than readers." King craves "to be blown clean out of myself for a while, as violently as a fighter pilot who pushes the EJECT button in his F-111." Readers expecting the inclusion of King to result in action-packed adventures or macabre gothics will be disappointed: the lineup for 2008 feels very similar to previous years. Story stalwarts such as T.C. Boyle, Ann Beattie, and Alice Munro (who has had her work included in every edition since 2001) make their expected appearance, as do the usual publications: The New Yorker, the Paris Review, the Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, etc. As is so often the case, the most exciting parts of the anthology are in the few outliers and surprises, such as "The Bris" by Eileen Pollack originally published in the literary magazine Subtropics, "Findings & Impressions" by Stellar Kim (her first published short story), and (in a nod to King's roots) "The Boy in Zaquitos" by Bruce McAllister from Fantasy and Science Fiction.
