This lot consists of two hardback volumes of poetry by the American poet James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916). Each volume consists of a single illustrated poem that tells a story. Both books have significant defects- please check the scans and read the descriptions below.
The Girl I Loved (illustrated by Howard Chandler Christy and published in 1910 by The Bobbs-Merrill Company) This poem tells its story four pages at at time. The first page has the verses, the second page has an illustration, the third page is blank, and the fourth page consists of a single line quotation from the poem, along with a smaller illustration (see scans 4 and 5 for an example). This format continues through the book. The illustrations are in red ink. This book is 8 3/4" by 6 1/2", about 90 pages long, with an illustrated cover and gilt lettering on the cover and spine. The cover is mostly detached, and the pages, while still sewn together, are very loosely bound. Aside from that, the cover is in very good condition, with general wear. The illustration that should be facing the title page has been cut out. The pages are nice, clean, and white.
A Hoosier Romance (illustrated by John Wolcott Adams and published in 1912 by The Bobbs-Merrill Company) The illustrations to this poem are mostly in black ink, with several in color. This book is 8" by 6", about 60 pages long, with an illustrated cover. The cover is mostly detached, and the pages, while still sewn together, are very loosely bound. The cover illustration has some wear (please see the 8th scan). The pages are nice, with very light browning.
