| 1878 antique ARCHERY George Cruikshank RACOON HUNTING …. 1878 antique dogs PUG Yorkshire Dandie Dinmont TERRIER ….. 1878 antique Maine KATAHDIN Santa Cruz POST OFFICE Mail …… It’s
a three quarters leather bound volume containing the May – Oct. 1878 issues of issues
of SCRIBNER’S MONTHLY MAGAZINE.
These 19th century Scribner’s are always packed with the most
wonderful articles, and fabulous wood engravings, and this one is no
exception. Highlights, in my
opinion, include: …….. a terrific 14 page
article on archery – MERRY DAYS WITH BOW AND QUIVER -- with equally terrific
wood engraved illustrations, by
Maurice Thompson. It’s largely about contemporary (at the time of the article, 1878) archery, for target
shooting and hunting…. Looks like it became a popular Victorian pastime……… Then there’s a great article
titled CAMPS AND TRAMPS ABOUT KTAADN (Katahdin) by Arbor Ilex (gee, that sounds
like a pseudonym if there ever was one) … with lots about camp equipment and
cooking and fishing. They climb
the mountain, too. At the end,
they figure out the cost per person.
$80.83. ($38 for round trip
railway transportation from New York to Mattewamkeag)….. a 20 page article,
illustrated, on THE NEW YORK POST OFFICE.
All about the background and present (1878) workings of the New York
postal system, including mail to foreign destinations… an eight page article on
dogs, OUR PETS AND PROTECTORS, including wood engravings of bulldogs, St.
Bernards, Yorkshire terriers ( 2 engravings), Dandie Dinmont terriers, and pugs
(2 engravings)… a 16 page article on GEORGE CRUIKSHANK, heavily illustrated ….. a ten page article on RACOON HUNTING in
Virginia, “That Same Old ‘Coon” with illustrations…. And how about A SEAPORT ON THE PACIFIC, all about Santa
Cruz, California, by Mary Hallock Foote.
It’s just a sleepy little village at the time, and this article reports
on the people, activities and things to see. And HUNTING THE MULE DEER IN COLORADO, by J. Harrison
Weir. The title says it all. …… There’s plenty more – there always is, in these terrific 19th
century bound volumes of Scribner’s…. but I think I’ve said enough.….. I listed this
same book twice, because there are so many terrific references in the contents
that I can’t fit them all into one title.
As soon as the book sells, I’ll delist the other entry. Bound volume containing issues May – Oct. 1878, SCRIBNER’S MONTHLY, AN
ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE FOR THE PEOPLE, J G. Holland, editor, New York: Scribner
and Compan., 1878. 7 x 10 inches. 912 pages. Three quarters leather over cloth covered boards. Exterior
spine joints were weak. I repaired them with strips of dyed Japanese art
paper. Color match not exact, but
hinges are now solid. The whole
process is reversible, as I used wheat paste glue. Interior is clean and bright. Tight binding. Condition: good…. Ships within 48 hours from Maine. Secure packaging...."Like Fort Knox" one
customer said. Shipping charge
