Gr 1-3 Like the other titles in this series, a child pretends that he is an animal and goes through a day in that creature's life. Here, a boy dives into the ocean and imagines himself to be a shark, "sleek and streamlined." The world of the great white is presented as it hunts for food: "You see a silver cloud,/a school of swirling fish./Too fast for you to catch,/they hunt food/too tiny for you to eat." Rothman's acrylic paintings are vivid and realistic. The lyrical text is placed unobtrusively on each double-page spread and the poetic words are stacked on top of one another. The part where the great white captures and kills a young seal is rather bloody: "You lift/your snout/and stretch/your red jaws/incredibly wide,/exposing/a pale circle/of daggers/that cut/and tear/as you/bite," but is at the same time realistic, as the shark fights off a competitor that tries to steal its prey. This series presents scientific information in an interesting format, making for good read-aloud material, especially for anyone doing a unit on biology.
