DFulffer's work is in many ways more interesting as a primary than a secondary source. Although this book's subject is the FFuhrer dictatorship, the real value of the study lies in its reflection of a distinct generational reevaluation of the German past. DFulffer views his account as different from previous assessments in that his generation does not carry the guilt of Nazi Germany. In fact, DFulffer dispels the notion of German war guilt all together. The suffering of Germany was that experienced by all of Europe. Here victims and persecutors were part of a larger fabric that encompassed them and the roles, sometimes interchangeable, they played. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.

Carefully interweaving thematic coverage with chronological narrative, historiographical analysis with assured and convincing conclusions, DFulffer's work will be widely read in English. That said, the translation is not entirely colloquial with even the German syntax surviving in places. . . . The author balances the appeal and achievements of Hitler's administration with the crime and genocide it unleashed as best he can. It is far from easy weighing the unexceptional, increasingly prosperous everyday life of pre-war Germany against the hideous persecution of 'racial enemies' and the slaughter of the war itself.
