Synopsis
The late bassist Noel Redding's memoir of his years with the Jimi Hendrix Experience is a classic tale of rock & roll, incorporating groupies, drugs, and large-scale financial chicanery. Accounting and hallucinogens don't mix, and Redding and Hendrix's drummer Mitch Mitchell found themselves continually outwitted by the band's co-manager, Mike Jeffery, who functions here as the villain of the piece. It won't be giving too much away to reveal that the musicians end up almost broke. Redding, in common with Bill Wyman, his counterpart in the Rolling Stones, kept a diary of his years with the band, providing many colorful vignettes of life as a late-1960s pop idol, which gives ARE YOU EXPERIENCED much of its contemporary flavor and immediacy. But his obsessive itemizing of arcane financial details (the Hendrix finances are a dizzying maze) reveals the murky dealings beneath the Day-Glo veneer.
