Formed by the Stereolab bassist Simon Johns, the U.K. band Imitation Electric Piano trades on a certain similar whimsical lyrical level to the space-age bachelor pad innovators, using the crystalline vocal talents of Brighton folk singer Mary Hampton. Driven by Johns's circular, propulsive bass lines, the band has a fresh, homespun feel colored by its subtle use of keyboards interwoven with more conventional rock guitar sounds on tracks such as the delightful "Energy Is Beautiful" and the charming folk-waltz "For the Best," as well as on rockers such as the Stereolab-like "Come Into Force Le Roque" and "Tension."
