The Midway Gardens History
The Midway Gardens was commissioned in 1913 by Edward C. Waller, Jr. It was to be a German-styled entertainment complex located in Chicago's South Side, with both indoor and outdoor gardens, concert halls, dance floors, a restaurant, a casino, a tavern, private clubs, and even a pool. The areas were designed to flow into each other seamlessly; one could take a meal from the restaurant and step down into the garden, laying on the grass and dining while listening to the orchestra play in the bandshell. The areas flowed up, as well: the roofs were terraces and gardens where visitors could relax and observe the ongoings below.
Anyway, Frank Lloyd Wright asked sculptor Alfonso Iannelli to work with him in the design and execution of many various sculptures to 'inhabit' the Gardens. Nearly a hundred figures in all were made, and they represent Frank Lloyd Wright's deepest exploration of the human figure in his long and distinguished career. These sculptures came to be collectively known as the Midway Garden Sprites.
Midway Gardens opened to the public on June 27th, 1914, to spellbound reception. Unfortunately, it was never financially stable, and after being hit hard by Prohibition, it began a decline that ended with its 1929 demolition.
