The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction print of a whimsical new print derived from the February 1, 1919 Judge Magazine cover done by a very popular magazine artist of this era, Paul Stahr. “Holding Up The Male” is the title and yes, it is a pun not a misspelling. After the end of World War I, many young fliers found work flying airmail for contractors of the United States Post Office. Of course these dashing young pilots made the hearts of many young women in the many towns they visited. In this work, four young women (one of whom is almost hidden) hand a letter to a pilot in an open aircraft while he holds the hand of one of them. We have this cover in two versions. This version has the magazine logo, date and headline and is smaller than the other version. The other version does not includes the magazine logo, date and top headline and therefore the actual image is larger than it appears here. To see the larger version click here. Paul Stahr (1883-1953) was a prolific illustrator of books and magazines including pulp men’s magazines. During the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds Puck, Judge and the early Life magazines combined a literary, artistic and political bent. Judge was founded as a weekly in 1881 by a group of artists who had previously worked for Puck.Eventually the magazine was sold to a wealthy man who aligned the magazine with the Republican Party. The magazine succeeded right through the 1920s and employed some of the best writers and artists of the period including James Montgomery Flagg, Charles Dana Gibson, Penrhyn Stanlaws, Howard Chandler Christy and Harrison Fisher among others.
