Publisher's Note
For the 50 million Americans who will travel abroad this year-- from college students to the business traveler, from families and children to senior citizens--"Flying Smart" by Zalin Grant is a must. This easy-to-read, highly personal guide to international travel has all the folksy good humor of Garrison Keillor combined with the sharp eyed reporting of Dan Rather. Once a journalist for "Time" Magazine and "The New Republic" and author of four books, Zalin Grant shows the reader how to fly smart, sprinkled with his own adventures while visiting 80 countries over the past 30 years. For example: * Why is Friday the 13th the best time to fly? * Why is it better to have tacky looking luggage? * When should you really leave for the airport? * How to avoid the "change money" rip-off. * What to eat before you fly. * Somebody stole my passport! What to do. * Do you really need all those clothes? * And much, much more. Not only is Zalin Grant a world traveler with lots of exciting stories to tell, he is also a good son.
This book is a comprehensive guide to international air travel for beginning and veteran travelers. It covers everything one needs to know from the minute they decide to fly until they reach their destination.

Industry reviews
Grant, a journalist and former war correspondent in Vietnam (Over the Beach, LJ 11/1/86), originally wrote this work as a tape for his mother's first flight to Paris her first flight anywhere. He offers a beginner's guide to international flying, including in his scope travel agents, passports, money, jet lag, packing, dress, checking in, boarding, food, customs, and other topics of interest. Most travelers will know some of the tips, but there is much to learn for those who have never flown and even something for veteran travelers. One small quibble: in the chapter on money, Grant fails to mention the cheapest way to change money abroad, the ATM card. One large criticism is the format: the 143 pages are printed on letter-size paper, on one side, and spiral bound. The book would make a useful pocket book if it weren't so unwieldy.
