SWITZERLAND Meije ALPS Mountaineering …. 1897 antique SOUTH
AFRICA Boer ZULU Gypsy Moth ELM …. 1897 antique GOLF
Newport ARDSLEY Bicycle KILAUEA Hawaii ….. Here’s an interesting item, a bound volume of the June to November 1897 issues of Harper’s Monthly Magazine. These 19th century Harper’s ALWAYS containing fascinating stuff, and this one’s no exception. Some of the highlights: a fifteen page article on A NEW SWITZERLAND, by Edwin Lord Weeks, the highlight of that being nine pages about mountain climbing the Meije, in the Alps, with some nice illustrations...... Then there is a three part series by Poultney Bigelow, title WHITE MAN’S AFRICA, the sections being THE DUTH FEELING TOWARD ENGLAND (The Boer at Home, Slaagter’s Neck, The Causes of the Great Trek, The Great Trek, Dingaan’s Daag), NATAL: A COLONIAL PARADISE , and BRITISH AND BOER GOVERNMENT (these three articles are the final three of a nine part series. The previous six must be contained in the previous bound volume of Harper’s Magazine… there’s an eight page article title A STATE IN ARMS AGAINST A CATERPILLAR, about a war to eradicate the gypsy moth in Massachusetts. I guess elm trees were at stake….. A 21 page piece on AROUND LONDON BY BICYCLE, by Elizabeth Robins Pennell. It’s illustrated, but most of the illustrations do not feature bicycles, I am afraid….. A 19 page illustrated article on THE GOLFER’S CONQUEST OF AMERICA, by Caspar Whitney, about the “golfing movement” in the United States, including information about early clubs, including the Palmetto Club House in Aiken, the Tacoma Course, the Colorado Springs Country and Golf Club House, Newport, Chicago, Meadow Brook Links, Brookline, Ardsley… a 12 page article on KILAUEA, THE HOME OF PELE, by Prof. William Libbey, mostly about the volcanic features of this Hawaiian island….. I listed this same book three times, because there are so many terrific references in the contents that I can’t fit them all into one title. As soon as the book sells, I’ll delist the other entries. …. HARPER’S MONTHLY MAGAZINE, VOL XCV , June to November 1897, New York: Harper and Brothers, 1897. 6 x 9.5 inches. 972 pages. Brown cloth covered boards, leather at spine. Exterior spine joints were weak, and leather was disintegrating in places on spine. I repaired it with layers of dyed Japanese art paper. Color match not exact, but hinges are now solid. The whole process is reversible, as I used wheat paste glue. I added a facsimile label to spine. Ex-library book, with standard marks resulting. Japanese art paper front hinge reinforcement. Variable light foxing and staining here and there. Otherwise, pages are clean and bright, with minimal foxing. Tight binding. Condition: good ….
