The liner notes to IF YOU WERE MINE, a collection of Holiday recordings from 1935-38, apologize for the selection of songs, claiming that they are of inferior quality to the tried and true standards for which Holiday is well known. While tunes such as "What A Little Moonlight Can Do," "Spreadin' Rhythm Around" and "You're Gonna See A Lot Of Me" haven't had the longevity of the Gershwin or Cole Porter songbooks, part of the joy of this album, at least for those already familiar with Lady Day's work, is the chance to hear her perform these lesser known yet still wonderful songs.
Holiday's voice is refreshingly light and flexible here, qualities which were later replaced by a darker tone and a heavier stylization. Her performances on tracks like "If You Were Mine," and "Let's Call A Heart A Heart," stand up against her best work and solos by legendary musicians like Benny Goodman, Roy Eldridge, Johnny Hodges and Lester Young make IF YOU WERE MINE a valuable and distinctive collection of Holiday recordings.
