RICK GRIFFIN "COMIC STRIP" POSTER FOR FAMILY DOG CONCERTS FEATURING QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE, TAJ MAHAL, SONS OF CHAMPLIN ON OCTOBER 27-29, 1967 AT THE AVALON BALLROOM IN SAN FRANCISCO. This poster features Mickey Mouse, Murph The Surf and a cast of other colorful characters. I believe that this is a SECOND PRINTING based upon the fact that it measures 14" by 20 15/16". At the bottom left it says 89-1 which usually signifies a first printing on Avalon Ballroom posters. According to Wolfgang's Vault......."The 1st printing poster lacks the scratches found in the reprint. It measures 14 3/16" x 20" and was printed before the concert" (asking price at Wolfgang's Vault for the First Printing is $719). "The 2nd printing shows a scratch in the bottom right hand corner of the rectangle that contains "The Family Dog" at the top of the poster. The scratch is above and to the right of the pink border and measures about 3/4". Some of the 2nd printings also have a scratch in the 10th panel that runs up and to the left of the submerged Family Dog logo. The post-concert 2nd printing measures 14" x 20 15/16" (the asking price at Wolfgang's Vault for this second printing is $264)". Above are pictures of the poster. The poster is currently framed, matted and has glass and a backing mat on it. I will include the frame, mat, glass, backing mat and any additional shipping costs for an extra $50. Otherwise I will either sent the poster in a tube or with a backing mat. All art items being sold on this site are the inventory of the former OUTSIDERS Gallery of Santa Barbara, California. The owners purchased the gallery from Pamela Auchincloss prior to her move to New York in 1987. The gallery specialized in avant garde artworks and included rock poster art from the 1960s in San Francisco including posters from the Avalon Ballroom and Fillmore Auditorium; original paintings from local and international artists; limited edition prints and posters from artists such as Robert Hoppe, Merkin, Nico,Erte, Icart, Dali, Otsuka, Nagel, Ansel Adams, LeRoy Neiman, G. A. Azoulay and others. In our art gallery in Santa Barbara from 1987-89 we amassed a huge collection of rock art posters. In regard to rock art we worked with Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, Paul Grushkin (author of The Art of Rock), Alton Kelley, Ben Friedman of the Postermat in San Francisco and Artrock to buy hundreds of Avalon Ballroom, Fillmore Auditorium and other posters. Our “ART OF ROCK” show of June, 1987 featuring Stanley Mouse and Paul Grushkin attracted over 4,000 people to the gallery in three days. The OUTSIDERS Gallery was sold in 1989 and all of the original paintings, limited edition prints, vintage posters and posters have been stored between sheets of acid free paper in large art drawers for the past twenty years. If you are looking for artwork from the 1920’s until the 1980s, we have it.
