1925
The 1925 Philadelphia Peace coin apparently did not experience the degree of melting seen by some of the other Peace issues. Many pieces survived in various states of preservation, both circulated and uncirculated. This is probably the best Peace dollar for overall quality. Most of the issue was reasonably well struck, with only a few specimens showing the typical weakness on the reverse. Every collector should own a 1925-P Peace dollar as an example of the highest strike quality in the series.
Surface brilliance is better than average and a large portion of the issue is only lightly bagmarked. All of this adds up to a significant quantity of MS-65 and MS-65+ examples. This is the most common Peace coin in absolute gem condition.
Dealers have estimated that 15% of the existing 1925-P coins are still uncirculated. Because of the favorable visual characteristics over 60% of the Mint State coins are classified as MS-65 or better.
Thirty-five years ago, this date was the rarest Peace dollar in Mint State. Then, at Christmas of 1945, the Treasury Department released a large quantity of these coins to the public. In those days, the Treasury seemed to delight in an annual holiday surprise release, which would catch collectors unawares.
