The Flighty Kite – charming illustrated children’s book, 1920s. This is a wonderful children’s story book titled The Flighty Kite that was published by Alf Cooke Ltd of Leeds and London some time around the mid-1920s I think. No author or illustrator is credited, which is a shame as the pictures throughout the book are lovely – especially the rather sinister-looking Kite in the first story. The book measures 10½” x 7½” and the thirty-six pages contain two stories. The first is The Flightly Kite, and the second is A Day At The Zoo – which are totally unconnected, with different characters. The covers each have the same picture of Harry, the boy from the first story, and his Kite. It is printed on fairly stiff card and is quite shiny – although over the 80+ years it has deteriorated slightly and it shows some creasing. But no rips or grazes and the cover alone displays well. The story itself an illustration on each page, most of which show Harry’s Kite, which he paints the face onto at the start of the tale. (The text in the stories is in blocks of four lines that rhyme). Harry has a bit of a nightmare day with his Kite as it drags him around the place causing all sorts of trouble and eventually the string breaks and flies away. The second story is about a little boy and girl named Joey and May who visit the Zoo. Nothing particularly exciting but it is an excuse to meet all sorts of animals – all very nicely illustrated. I have dated the book from its general style / appearance and also the clothing that the children are wearing in the pictures. I would guess that it is nearer 1920 than 1930.
