HENRI-EMILE-BENOIT MATISSE

"I am unable to make any distinction between the feeling I get from life and the way I translate the feeling into painting."

LA CITE - NOTRE DAME

ETCHING ON LAID PAPER SIGNED ON THE PLATE. ONE OF 3 VIEWS CREATED ON THE THEME OF "LA CITE." FROM A POSTHUMOUS EDITION ASIDE FROM THE ORIGINAL EDITION OF 500 RELEASED IN 1937.

BORN IN 1869, HENRI MATISSE WAS A FRENCH ARTIST OF COLOR AND HIS FLUID, BRILLIANT AND ORIGINAL DRAFTSMANSHIP. ONE OF THE BEST KNOW ARTISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, HE WAS ORIGINALLY LABELED AS A FAUVE (WILD BEAST), BUT BY THE 1920s, HE WAS INCREASINGLY HAILED AS AN UPHOLDER OF THE CLASSICAL TRADITION IN FRENCH PAINTING. HE WAS A PAINTER, SCULPTOR, PRINTMAKER, AND DRAFTSMAN.

THIS WORK OF ART, A STUNNING REPRESENTATION OF THE NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL IN PARIS, IS FROM ONE OF HIS ETCHINGS. MATISSE WAS INTIMATE WITH HIS PRINTMAKING AND ETCHING. UNLIKE MANY ARTISTS WHO HAD CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS WITH MASTER PRINTERS IN THEIR WORKSHOPS, MATISSE SPENT MORE TIME ON AN ETCHING PRESS THAT WAS INSTALLED IN HIS OWN STUDIO. THIS ALLOWED HIM TO PRINT WHEN AND AS HE LIKED. THIS INTIMACY IS ALSO EVIDENT IN THE SUBJECTS OF HIS ETCHINGS. HIS ETCHINGS WERE EXECUTED ON A SMALL SCALE WITH LINEAR FLUIDITY, GIVING THEM A SENSE OF IMMEDIACY AND SPONTANEITY, LIKE PAGES IN A SKETCHBOOK.

HENRI MATISSE DIED IN NICE IN 1954, AND AFTER HIS DEATH, A POSTHUMOUS EDITION RELEASE OF THIS PIECE WAS CREATED FROM HIS ORIGINAL ETCHING OF LA CITE - NOTRE DAME. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE PIECE ARE:

UNFRAMED: 13-1/4" X 10-3/8"

FRAMED: 28" X 26"

THE ETCHING PLATE WAS SIGNED, AND IT WAS CREATED IN 1937. THIS PIECE WILL SHIP WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY AND AN APPRAISAL.

I WILL SHIP WITHIN THE UNITED STATES BY UPS GROUND INSURED.
