1858 antique decorative leather PARIS Samblanck VIRGIL ….
Exquisite ornate morocco leather binding by the celebrated Paris bindery of
Samblanck-Weckesser (Charles De Samblanck and Jacques Weckesser) of the 1858 volume of the works of
Virgil -- PUBLII VIRGILII MARONIS CARMINA OMNIA.
PERPETUO COMMENTARIO AD MODUM JOANNIS BOND. EXPLICUIT FR. DUBNER. Highest
quality of book binding… people collected the Samblanck-Weckesser volumes for
the bindings alone. The book
contains the works of Virgil, in Latin, with French commentary.Engraved title page and a profusion of engraved
headpieces at the beginning of each chapter.I’m not sure what the specific type of printing process is
with these images, and would love to know, if anyone cares to educate me.The engravings are actually pasted in
onto the pages..…..
I should add here that this book is kind of a sad story, for me anyway. A couple of weeks ago, I put this book up for auction and it sold, successfully. The buyer was from overseas and wanted tracking service on the book. My wife took the book to the post office to get the exact price for this service. On her way out, she dropped the book! The rear board separated at the exterior joint. I contacted the buyer and, understandably enough, he decided he no longer wanted the book at the price he had offered. I have since done a repair on the book, using layers of Japanese art paper, applied with wheat paste glue. While I was at it, I reinforced the other exterior joint as well. Perhaps I should have just left things alone, but I got ambitious. At any rate, what's done is done, live and learn, etc. and it's all reversible, since the adhesive is totally water soluable. I've highlighted those joints with photos. So here it is again, round two.....
