This one is unsigned and is the last photo of Whittle in 1863 that I have for sale. It's from a collection of Whittle family photos. He's my wife's great grandfather. Lt. William C. Whittle Jr. was the son of CSN Commodore William C. Whittle. Each made a name for himself in the Mexican War at Vera Cruz. Lt. Whittle was executive officer and co-commander of the CSS Shenandoah, the Confederate raider that decimated the New Bedford whaling fleet in the Pacific. This photo was taken in Paris in 1863. In that year "secret agent" Whittle, under an assumed name and at the direction of James Bulloch, was dispatched to sneak aboard the Sea King in London as it's purser. The Sea King sailed south to the Madeira Islands where it rendezvoused with the Laurel (which sailed from Liverpool) carrying a crew of CSN officers and supplies to outfit the Sea King for war. On the island of Desertas the ship was commissioned the CSS Shenandoah......... and the rest, as they say, is history.
