THEA VON HARBOU
METROPOLIS
The Reader's Library, London 1927.
First printing in the incredibly scarce dustwrapper designed by Aubrey Hammond. A novelization of the film Metropolis as written by Von Harbou who was Lang's wife.
An important early film related science fiction title.
This is a correct 1st printing which does not mention the title of the book on either the rear flap of DW or in the listing of other books inside. It is unrestored and has an original dustwrapper not a facsimile.
Please check other internet sources for current prices on this title. You will see that one with a replica DW is more than £200 and the cheapest copy with a genuine DW nudges £1000. Offered here at a dealer friendly starting price with no reserve.
CONDITION:
Dustwrapper - as seen in photos wrapper is somewhat shabby but mostly complete. Front panel has numerous chips but nothing major, spine has lost top 2cm and bottom 2.5cm. Back panel has lost small piece at bottom corner and a strip along top edge. Inner flaps are both complete. All folds on the flaps are very worn (see photos) and front flap is close to being detached. Inspecting the underside of wrapper shows show slight foxing and general browning of paperstock.
Book - book is gilt embossed red boards. At the places on spine where DW is missing the boards have faded slight as they also have on back panel where strip of DW is missing, the bottom edge of spine near front panel has a 2cm split.
The paper stock is very brown. This is common with all books published by this company who generally issued cheap tie-in novels of popular films and used cheap materials.
The first few pages have a slight wrinkle to them.
The front hinge is quite weak. Binding is quite weak throughout book and a couple of pages stick out slightly from main block. Pages 195-200 have come loose as shown in picture, they are not damaged or creased just separated from binding.
This copy could be tidied up and sympathetically restored quite easily by anybody with the time, skill or inclination. It certainly offers an opportunity to own this key sci-fi first edition at an affordable price.
