History of the 1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM
SCREAMING CHICKEN: That's a term of endearment for the decal on the Trans Am hood. It first appeared in 1973. The largest such "chicken stickers" were found on the Tenth Anniversary Trans Am in 1979. Check out those "Smokey and the Bandit" Burt Reynolds movies on late-night TV for good examples of Seventies styling excessiveness.
Alas, that was the automotive dark ages, performance-wise. Antismog legislation had strangled horsepower output available with then-current technology and modern electronic and materials technology had not yet been invented. 400-cubic inch engines with 150 horsepower or so were the result.
The highlight of the 1973 Pontiac lineup had to be the Super Duty Trans Am or SD-455. This was a venerable beast of a car which could strike fear into the most powerful of muscle cars.
The "X" coded Trans Am received a one year only high performance 455cid motor which featured a reinforced engine block including additional main webbing support, forged crank, forged aluminum pistons with massive 7/16 rod bolts, carefully engineered intake and 800cfm carburetor, and a set of special high performance heads. These heads were the key to making smog legal power in the Trans Am. This included a specialized new manufacturing process which allowed thinner port walls, swirl polished valves, and attention to detail. The results were a highly efficient cylinder head that made tons of torque and horsepower. This all added up to a car capable of mid 13 second quarter mile times at 104mph.
The Firebird Trans Am with the 455 engine was the last high-performance muscle engine of the original muscle car generation. The 455 engine first made its appearance in 1971 as the 455-HO. In 1973 and 1974, a special version of the 455, called the SD-455, was offered.
The SD-455 used the left over components from Pontiac's 366 NASCAR engine and was built as a full bore racing engine producing over 540 horsepower and was then toned down to appease the EPA and to meet GM's strict horsepower policy which required all GM vehicles to hold the HP to under 300. As a result, the PMD engineer listed the SD-455 at 290 hp but in reality, was producing in final form, (Approx 440 gross horsepower).
What made this engine unique was the ease with which it could be returned to its 500+ horsepower form.
The SD-455 is often considered the last of the true muscle car engines and, by many, considered to be the most powerful factory Pontiac engine ever produced. Pontiac offered the 455 for a few more years, but tightening restrictions on vehicle emissions guaranteed its demise. The 1976 Trans Am was the last of the "Big Cube Birds" with only 7,100 units made with the 455 engine.
The 1973 Pontiac Firebird carried the styling from the 1972 Firebird. Some minor exterior changes included a new egg crate styled grill and redesigned endura bumpers. A new addition to the exterior styling of the 1973 Firebird was the large bird decal which covered the entire hood of the Trans Am. This memorable and appreciated "screaming chicken" decal is well known by car lovers everywhere.
