SYNOPSIS
|
Sleepy Eyes of Death is the American title of a 1960s Japanese film series that starred Ichikawa Raizo as a ronin named Nemuri Kyôshirô. The character is described as a "mysterious stranger, the samurai with the strange, sleepy eyes. His mother Japanese; his father a foreigner." He is also called "the son of the Black Mass" (because of being conceived during a Black Mass in which his mother, a noble's daughter, was raped by a fallen Western priest) and is a master of Engetsu-Sappo, "The Full Moon Cut", in which he draws a circle with his sword, slaying his opponents upon completion of the circle.
A series of mysterious murders in a peasant village attracts Kyoshiro's attention and brings him into conflict with Takayuki, one of the Shogun's many bastard children. Takayuki's mother is plotting to make her son the next Shogun and is busily arranging the deaths of the Shogun's other sons; if a few peasants have to die along the way, it is of no consequence to her. When Takayuki decides he must posses Kyoshiro's spectacular sword, Kyoshiro finds himself in a web of deception, treachery and death. Only the master of the FULL MOON CUT can save the peasants, but in order to do that, he must first convince them he is on their side. And then he must surrender his sword to save them!
