Recorded at The Loft, Saline, Michigan and Sierra Alegre, Hollywood, California in March and April, 1999.
To the surprise of just about everyone, Squirrel Bait probably had the greatest direct influence on '90s indie rock of any '80s band, as its ex-members formed such influential bands as Gastr del Sol, Slint, and The For Carnation. Singer Peter Searcy's Big Wheel foreshadowed the politely collegiate pop rock of Hootie and the Blowfish or Third Eye Blind, but his solo debut is the best record he's been involved with since Squirrel Bait's SKAG HEAVEN.
The sound is not far removed from Big Wheel-every song has the potential for heavy AAA rotation, especially the anthemic "Bored"-but the songwriting, production, and performances are worlds better. The lyrics are equally improved, examining the mixed emotions of a Gen-Xer on the other side of 30 without cliche or self-pity, and you'll remember why an oft-quoted Spin review from the Squirrel Bait days claimed that Searcy had the best voice in rock & roll.
