Synopsis
A critical view of John Kennedy and his administration, concentrating on the ways in which the president's personality influenced his decisions in affairs of state. Hersh maintains that Kennedy felt a profound urge to assert his masculinity in any confrontation, and that this led him--particularly in his foreign policy--into ill-advised blunders.

Publisher's Note
In this groundbreaking book, award-winning investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh shows us a John F. Kennedy we have never seen before, a man insulated from the normal consequences of behavior long before he entered the White House. His father, Joe, set the pattern with an arrogance and cunning that have never been fully appreciated: Kennedys could do exactly what they wanted, and could evade any charge brought against them. Kennedys wrote their own moral code. And Kennedys trusted only Kennedys. Jack appointed his brother Bobby keeper of the secrets - the family debt to organized crime, the real state of Jack's health, the sources of his election victories, the plots to murder foreign leaders, and the president's intentions in Vietnam. The brothers prided themselves on another trait inherited from their father - a voracious appetite for women - and indulged it with a daily abandon deeply disturbing to the Secret Service agents who witnessed it. These men speak for the first time about their amazement at what they saw and the powerlessness they felt to protect the leader of their country.

Industry reviews
"Marilyn Monroe alone escapes untarnished from this file cabinet of a book, in which the celebrated investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh holds up to the available light in strict chronological order just about every report, claim, rumor or telltale clue of precisely and exclusively those things that President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert, his friends, assistants, confidants, lawyers, secret emissaries, faithful Government servants and, we are assured, his numerous one-time, part-time, sometime and longtime sexual partners were united in wishing to shroud in decent secrecy forever."
New York Times Book Review - Thomas Powers (12/14/1997)

"Nobody...has trashed the image of Kennedy as thoroughly or as savagely as investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh does in his already much discussed new book."
Collins

"A stunning new book."

This full sized first edition hardback book is perfect.  It looks brand new.  I could even sell it for new and no one would know any different.  But it is used.  It must have been read at least once.

Seymour M. Hersh is one of America's premier investigative reporters.  He tells us the real story of those risks, in the hands of a crisis-driven president who maintained a facade of cool toughness while negotiating private compromises unknown to even his closest advisers.  Don't miss this book.
