In the early seventies, Shintaro Katsu, of “Zatoichi” fame, produced a series of samurai films, based on the popular manga “Lone Wolf and Cub,” starring his older brother Tomisaburo Wakayama. These hyper-violent jidaigeki were to be so impressive and utterly original that some American producers would later compile the first two parts into “Shogun Assassin,” which subsequently influenced many filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino (“Kill Bill”).

 Second "Baby Cart" film, and as good as the first film. Fans of the series think this is the best film in the series and I could see why. One thing is for sure: this sequel is a tad more ambitious than the original movie. The first film established the concept, but the sequel expands some of the themes that the first film only hinted at. Our hero Ogami Itto is still fighting the nefarious Yagyu clan. In addition, Ogami is hired to kill a spy who has stolen some precious secrets. Action scenes are potent and graphic, but there are also very imaginative. The film also benefits from a nice, very subtle sense of humor. The whole thing actually plays like a James Bond movie. The stroller has so many gadgets, that one expects "Q" to show up and explain the cart's mechanism. There is also a fascinating subplot about a female assassin (a great performance by Kayo Matsuo) who becomes emotionally attached to Ogami's son. Again, there is plenty of blood, and mayhem, so viewer's discretion is advised (the scene where the female clan cut a man into little pieces of human flesh, gave me nightmares - I'm not kidding!). It's a fabulous movie.
