RARE VINTAGE ANTIQUE
BALANCING SYPHON (SIPHON) COFFEE MAKER
This is a very rare antique balancing syphon coffee maker from the mid 1800's. A similar syphon (with the exception of the glass decanter) may be found in the book "Coffee Makers 300 years of art & design" by Edward & Joan Bramah on page 101 (see photo). This syphon has a weighted counterpoise (the large round knob on the glass decanter side of the framework). The coffee container is a white ceramic, as is the base. It measures 16-1/4" high x 10-5/8" wide x 6-3/4" deep. The stand is marked "B9de15ANS". It has an ornate top that forms a circle to hold the filter rod, of which has its original cork stopper. It also has its original wooden handle that when moved forward allows the coffee to be dispensed.
A description of how the coffee is brewed is taken from the book as follows:
"The weight of the cold water in the right hand container, which was commonly ceramic, held pen the lid of the spirit lamp. When water passed over into the glass flask the empty jar rose, assisted by the counterpoise action of the weight attached to the ring around the flask. The lid was released and flipped shut to extinguish the flame. The air in the jar then cooled and the partial vacuum drew back the coffee, causing the jar to descend again."
This is a VERY RARE item. They brew the coffee so well that they are being reproduced by several companies in copper and brass, but to find an original old one with the ceramic container is a true find! Do not let this opportunity to pass by a truly unique piece.
Please look at all the photos carefully to make your own determination of the condition of the item.
The syphon will be packaged well, each piece will be wrapped seperately and well protected! Shipping will be via USPS only (as UPS tends to break things too often) and will be insured for final value, with delivery confirmation.
Please ask any questions that you may have early so that you don't miss out on this wonderful piece!
