Hold some real Maine history in your hand. This is probably an original stock certificate of the Lincoln National Bank of Bath, Maine... signed April 1, 1865, and No. 19: the bank was chartered as a National institution Jan. 27, 1865. It had been the Lincoln Bank of Bath, chartered in 1813, while Maine was still a part of Massachusetts.

Nor was this institution named for President Abraham Lincoln; instead it took its name from Lincoln County (Mass.) which was named after Lincolnshire, in the Greater London area of England. Bath became the county seat of the new Sagadahoc County in 1854, when the southern part of Lincoln County (by now in the new state of Maine [1820])  was separated off.

The certificate was printed by Hatch & Co., 111 Broadway, N.Y., it says in fine print; and the marvelous vignette is the U. S. Capitol in Washington.

President signing this is (unclear but Jas. F.) Patten.

The certificate is on thin rag paper, but in good condition; rounded corners on the right.

One banknote in the initial issue of the bank's National Bank notes recently was sold in the thousands of dollars category. The owner of that note really deserves this certificate, but that's up you. Staring bid is $ 44.95. Shipped priority insured for $5.95, U.S. only.
