New Orleans quartet Cowboy Mouth suffered with the rest of their city's population in the wake of 2005's hurricane Katrina. Their VOODOO SHOPPE album, which they were recording when the hurricane hit, mixes contemporary punk rock on songs like "Joe Strummer" and "This Much Fun" with R&B flourishes on the title track and "Hole in My Heart." The band's good-timey vibe is understandably tempered by their Katrina experience, portrayed in the post-hurricane "Home," though their optimistic anthem "Glad to Be Alive" and "The Avenue" predict a rosier future for the Crescent City. Singer and drummer Fred LeBlanc is a vibrant presence, and the band displays confidence and energy enough to overcome the worst that nature can do.
