Tom Ainslie

Ainslie's Complete Guide to Thoroughbred Racing
The First Encyclopedia of the Game
How Expert Bettors Won

New York: Simon and Schuster, (1968)
Hardcover + Dustjacket, 6-1/4" x 9-1/4", 493 p.

Complete guide to thoroughbred racing, by Tom Ainslie.

From dustjacket:

In this encyclopedic instruction guide, Tom Ainslie gives the racing fan what Charles Goren gave the bridge player - a comprehensive, unerringly accurate, crystal-clear review of a great game and how to play it well.  Just as Goren revolutionized bridge by sharing expert techniques with the amateur, Ainslie now dispels the mysteries and confusions of the world's most popular spectator sport.

Includes:

"Everything the Fan Needs to Know About the World's Most Popular Sport...

The truth about Breeding and Conformation - How horsemen bet - Trainers to watch - Class ratings that work - When weight counts - How trainers use distance - Analyzing pace - Jockeys who win - How to detect hidden form - The unfit horse - Ways to improve the percentages - Amazing speed charts - Accurate track variants - Using the tote board - Paddock secrets - Daily doubles - How stable costs affect performance - The beatable race - Mud and grade - Evaluating workouts - Track ratings - Good and bad training - Blinkers and bits - Plus 77 systems - and much more....."

Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and diagrams.

Pictorial dustjacket, with original price of $14.95, very good with light edgewear and faint toning along page edges.  Red paper and cloth over boards with gold stamped title, very good.  Bottom corner bumped/creased on lower board.  Very small (<1/4") pale dampstain at top edge of preliminary pages, but otherwise internally very good with strong, tight binding.
