ACCORDING TO THE LEGEND, The Algonquins called them "FAIRY STONES" and often carried them as luck charms when they went on fishing or hunting expedition.
The lovers offered the most beautiful "FAIRY STONES" to their loved ones." This unique concretion CALLED FAIRY STONE (PIERRE DE FÉE IN FRENCH) is composed of fine sand and clay AND has been sculptured and solidified BY NATURE 10 000 OF years ago corresponding to holocene (geological) or neolithic (archAeologicAL) epoch.
Contrary to certain beliefs, man has nothing to do with the smooth shapes and the composition of these concretions. Credit returns to Mother Nature! HISTORY Picked on the shores of the Harricana River, Abitibi, Quebec, Canada, these pebbles have been formed thousands of years ago. They are made of fine sand and clay, solidified by nature.
legend… The Algonquins called them "FAIRY STONES" and often carried them as luck charms when they went on fishing or hunting expedition. The lovers offered the most beautiful "FAIRY STONES" to their loved ones. The biggest specimens occupied a place of honor in their homes, or according to the legend, these stones assured a protection against the bad spirits. They also brought good health and prosperity to the occupants of the premises. These "FAIRY STONES" are at the origin of the name "HARRICANA RIVER". In fact, when the first Algonquins come up the river towards Abitibi, a stop on these beaches made them realize the presence of these pebbles which for them, strangely looked like "BISCUITS". This is the reason why they named the river "HARRICANA" which means: "RIVER OF THE BISCUITS" in the ALGONGUIN language.
These specimens are found in the soft deposits of the Quaternary where they were found in the pounds having occupied the depression of the retreat of the glacial front; subsequently they were carried by the water and deposited on the shores of the lakes and rivers. I would also like to mention that these specimens are collected by my husband and me once a year. When we collect these concretions, we never know what we will find. Our expeditions are fun, exhausting and I would say addictive! But not every expedition is successful… Sometimes we return home empty-handed… But when we find concretions, oh well, we forget about our backache and our scratched hands because it is worth it! Of course, when we find a concretion, usually it is so covered with clay mud we don’t know what it looks like! We bring them home, clean and dry them, and then we proceed at the selection to finally present them to you.
