Rubbra: Symphony No.2 / Festival Overture - Handley, NM

Edmund Rubbra: Symphony No.2 / Festival Overture - Vernon Handley conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra.

LP, HNH RECORDS (LYRITA) Stereo 4081
Cover: VG++/Near Mint
Record: Near Mint

Edmund Rubbra (23 May 1901 – 14 February 1986) was a British composer. He composed both instrumental and vocal works for soloists, chamber groups and full choruses and orchestras. He was highly respected by fellow musicians and was at the peak of his public popularity in the mid-20th century. The most famous of his works are his eleven symphonies. Although he was composing at a time when many people wrote twelve-tone music, he decided not to compose in this style. Instead he devised his own distinctive method of composition. His later works were less popular with the concert-going public, although he never lost the respect of his fellow-professionals. His music is, therefore, less well known today than would have been expected from his early popularity. His compositions are full of drama, with an improvisatory feel.

CONDITION NOTES:

 Note: In some cases, a meticulous collector will have written in very small neat handwriting the date and place of purchase on a corner of the back cover and in some instances disc timings, musical notations in the libretto booklet, etc.. I do not mention this in my listing because it is minor, and I believe adds to the provenance of the LP.

Records are generally graded on visual inspection under strong and angled lighting.

Mint: A brand new, SEALED record, never played.

NM: Near Mint. An unsealed record that looks as good as new.

VG++: Excellent. Light cosmetic flaws that should not affect the sound.

VG+: May have cosmetic flaws, mild surface noise or short patches of ticking, but should sound fine overall.

VG: May have moderate noise throughout or one or two bad patches from scratches. Still fine for general listening.

Good: Noisy, but plays through. I will only sell very rare or unusual items in this condition.
