Antique nursery rhyme tile depicting "There Was a Lady Loved a Swine" from the original design also published in "A Baby's Own Opera" by Walter Crane, c. 1878-1880, made by an unknown firm. The nursery rhyme tiles were printed by Mintons and Maw in England prior to their production in the US by Mosaic, Wheeling and AET in the US, and I am unsure of this tile's maker. This tile is nicely handpainted on a porcelain body in bright colors in rich detail. Crane worked at the London Decorating Company and it is possible that this tile was painted there at his direction. Somehow it feels more English than American to me. Perhaps someone out there can identify the back which is similiar to Sherwin and Cotton, but not Sherwin and Cotton. The tile measures 6" x 6" and is in very good condition with slight edge nibbles around the perimeter of the tile (mainly at upper right) with a shallow nick on the left edge and slight thinness to the glaze at l.r. corner. No other surface scratches or wear. Bright clean tile with good color. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to write. Thank you for viewing the listing. |
