This auction is for the new, improved model of our favorite little workhorse, the FreshRoast 8, the most popular home coffee roaster with over 60,000 units sold worldwide. It is sturdier and has twice the capacity of its predecessor. This roaster will generate about 4oz of roasted coffee, which using our recommended coffee to water ratio comes out to 72oz of coffee (or 12 6-oz cups). It is more versatile that its little brother the SR300, but not as sophisticated as the I-Roast2, a roaster with which it intends to compete. But the I-Roast2 sells for about $20 more.

With the SR500 you can vary the length of the roast time, the temperature of the roast (low, middle, high) and the fan speed (a turning knob). We recommend 7 minutes to get a medium roast. The SR500 allows you to control the roast better than the SR300, but we are not convinced it is a better roaster worth the extra $50. For example, if you set the fan on high and agitate the beans to briskly, the chamber will never get hot enough and your beans will not roast; they will just bake, which is something you do not want to do. If you want a no-fuss, no-tinkering roaster, or you do not have the patience to fiddle with knobs and controls, stick with the SR300 and purchase good quality green coffee beans to get nice even roasts. If you want to store profiles and have more control of your roast, spend the extra $20 and buy an I-Roast2, which is currently unavailable.

Free Coffee Samples: We will include at no extra cost two samples (half pound each, one pound total) of very-high-quality Bolivian Specialty and Premium green coffee beans to get you started on roasting, as soon as you open the box! These beans are 100% Arabica. You will receive samples of our Invalsa Extra (A) and Invalsa Superior (AA) coffee beans. These coffee beans are certified organic by BioLatina (an USDA agent). If you prefer (custom regulations, lower shipment costs, etc), we can also ship the roaster without any coffee beans. Just let us know.

Bolivian specialty organic coffee is the current "Hidden Valley" of all specialty coffees.  Find out what the latest buzz is all about.  Several of our growers have won the top four spots on the coveted Cup of Excellence® Awards in the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 competitions. We bought the coveted 2007 competition first-place lot, the highest-price 2008 competition second-place lot and the 2009 competition sixth place lot, all Presidential Award winners!  Here is the link: http://www.cupofexcellence.org/CountryPrograms/Bolivia/2007Program/AuctionResults/tabid/398/Default.aspx

We buy these beans directly from farmer cooperatives and import them directly into the US.  Our US green coffee warehouse is located north of Boston.  Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about coffee and/or about coffee roasting.  All questions are welcome and answered promptly.

Please read our extensive eBay coffee-products buyers' feedback (100% positive, close to 3,600 transactions, over 2,300 distinct buyers, over 1,250 repeat customers) and buy with confidence.  We are very proud of our record and reputation.  We are eBay's Gold-level Power Sellers.  In order to reach the Gold-level distinction, Ebay sellers must uphold the eBay community values, including honesty, timeliness and mutual respect and maintain average monthly sales of more than $10,000, and a Feedback level of 98% or higher.  Only a few, select eBay sellers reach this level of distinction and recognition.  Please check our other auctions for other grades and quantities, as well as coffee gear. PRODUCT REVIEW: In our opinion, The FreshRoast SR500 is an improved version of the workhorse FreshRoast8 but doesn't quite measure up to the I-Roast2. However, the I-Roast2 is not available for purchase until (probably) late March, 2010.  We have tested them extensively and are ready to endorse them. However, make sure you understand the impact of changing fan speed and temperature before you find your "comfort zone". Your first roasts may not come out well until you get the hang of the new variables. Because of the ability to control fan speed (.i.e. bean agitation) and roast temperature you will be able to roast smaller batches, greater scope of green coffee beans (denser, larger, "dirtier", low-quality) and get darker roasts. Most of the times, more capabilities is a good thing. We tried smaller batches (less than four scoops), but found the best results with 120 grams of green coffee (about four scoops), as recommended by the manufacturer.

With twice the capacity of its predecessor, you may only need to roast daily or every other day. If you do not want to roast every day, we recommend that you consider the larger models, the Behmor 1600, the Gene Cafe, and the Hottop. However, they are much more expensive. This unit measures 13" by 6.5" by 8" and weighs about 4.5 lbs. Shipping weight (including free coffee) is about 7 lbs.

We are one of the largest authorized distributors, located on the East Coast (Boston).  You can tell that because the units carry our name and logo behind the manufacturer's :-)) See picture above.  We service and support what we sell, and we stock for immediate shipment all necessary parts, including the replacement glass roasting chamber.  Here is the link to all the FreshRoast8 parts we stock and have available for immediate shipment: http://www.invalsa.com/index.php?cPath=21_36_45

Roasting Tips: One roast will make 8 to 12 cups, depending on the coffee strength desired. To use it, lift the chaff collector, add 4.6oz (that is four measures of the included scoop) of green coffee beans, replace the collector, select the temperature setting (low, med, or high) to turn on the roaster and select the fan speed. We recommend that you select the fan speed so that there is as little agitation as possible but without getting beans scorched. If you agitate the beans too much, the chamber will not get hot enough to properly roast the beans. When in the cooling cycle, we recommend using the highest fan setting to speed up the cooling process. The faster you cool the beans the better off they will turn out. This is why some users recommend that you dump the roasted beans in a cold colander. We have not found that necessary with the variable fan speed. About ten minutes later you will have fresh roasted coffee!  It is very important to empty the chaff basket after every use. We recommend using a natural-bristle paint brush to break the static, which causes the chaff to stick to the collector, and thus remove the chaff with more ease. Do not unplug the roaster until the fan stops by itself and the beans are cool to the touch.  You can enjoy your coffee then by grinding and brewing it, but it is better if you let the roasted coffee"rest" by 6 to 24 hours, so that all the CO2 gases escape and the full flavor develops.

Warranty and Repair Info: This roaster is covered with a one-year limited warranty by the manufacturer, Fresh Beans, Inc. For any warranty issues, please contact the manufacturer directly at (805) 501-7731. Or simply return the defective part, including a copy of our invoice to Fresh Beans Inc. 6436 Business Park Loop "G" Park City, Utah 84098. Enclose your return address, telephone number and date of purchase in the box. The manufacturer will repair or replace the defective part. The manufacturer is very good in repairing and/or replacing defective units. If after trying with the manufacturer in good faith, you receive no satisfaction, please contact us, we will intercede for you and make things right.

This unit will make a great gift, at a very reasonable price, for the coffee aficionado or for that special person that "has everything". Yes, we can send it as a gift. We can even include a card for you. Ask us. We are here to help you and make your shopping experience with us a very pleasant one!

A quick primer on fresh-roasted coffee:   Most people are amazed to learn that once a coffee bean has been roasted, it starts to lose flavor, slowly at first, but surely in just three days, even if it has not been ground.  Over the next three weeks, even more flavor is lost, beyond repair.  Most of us don't often have a chance to taste the full flavor of coffee, unless we know a local coffee roaster.  Until 50 years ago, this is how coffee was sold, just like milk.  Your local coffee roaster delivered freshly roasted beans to your home at regular intervals based on your family's consumption.  After WWII, when "development" took place, national coffee roasters started offering "convenient" and "scientifically" packaged coffee and convinced us that "modern" coffee was "just as good" and without all the fuss and mess.  Well, guess what, commercial coffee tasted awful, and we just drank it because we wanted the caffeine.  The only thing we cared about was the price.  No wonder young kids started drinking colas.  It also has caffeine, but at least it tastes good and sweet!

Let's go back!  With a modern home coffee roaster, like this one, there is no mystery to in-home coffee roasting.  In just 7 to 8 minutes, you will be ready to brew a pot of the freshest coffee that you have ever made. Furthermore, once you have started roasting your own coffee, you will be able to savor the truly finest coffees in the world freshly roasted in your own home!

So, go ahead, recover one of the timeless, lost pleasures and start roasting your own coffee today.

Return Policy:  Within 3 days after you have received an item you can return it to us, provided that, in our judgment, it is unopened, unused and in 100% resalable condition. There is  no re-stocking fee for unopened, returned, resalable items.  If in our judgement, the return item is resalable, but only as an used item, we will only refund 50% of the original sale price.  Shipping charges are not refundable and you are responsible for shipping charges incurred to return any item to us. All returned merchandise must be in its original packing carton with all the supporting accessories, forms and instruction manuals. Exchanges, replacements and refunds are made only after the returned item is received by us, so make sure you insure it. We will not issue refunds for damaged-after-receipt, or misused merchandise.

Customer Satisfaction Policy:  a) Defective Items: For defective items please contact the manufacturer directly for warranty repair/replacement. We provide all necessary help including manufacturer's address, toll free numbers and/or invoices, as necessary.  If within 30 days after we have shipped, AND after you have tried in good faith to obtain warranty repair/replacement from the manufacturer and are not satisfied with the outcome, we will exchange any defective item at no charge, after we have received the defective unit from you.

b) Damaged goods in transit with purchased shipping insurance:  We will file an insurance claim with the carrier. In order to receive an immediate replacement of the damaged goods, the customer needs to provide us with a Credit Card or PayPal payment for the value of the replacement part/product AND return (at their expense) the damaged parts for insurance verification. Otherwise, we will not ship the replacement part/product until we receive the damaged part/product from the customer or the insurance claim payment.  Once the insurance payment and/or the damaged part/product is received we will credit the credit card or refund the PayPal payment.

c) Damaged goods in transit without purchased shipping insurance:  Customers who opt not to purchase shipping insurance and receive shipping-damaged goods have no recourse to us. Our responsibility ends when we hand over the merchandise to the carrier

Stocking, Shipping Policies:  We only auction what we have on stock.  We don't play "inventory logistics" games and buy the item with your money after you won and paid for the auction.  This is what sellers with unrealistic low prices, high shipping costs and long delivery dates do.  If we run out of stock (because the unit was sold at our online store) we terminate auctions without bids early.  If you win an auction you are guaranteed to receive the item. So bid with confidence, you will get what you win in a few days (depending on your location).

We ship the same business day payment is received, if payment is received before 2:00pm (EST).  Otherwise, we ship the following business day.  We will ship, via FedEx Ground or USPS Priority Mail only to the continental US.  Depending on where you are located, you will receive your roaster the next day or in four to five business days if you are in the West Coast. We use these shipping services because they offer tracking service and a delivery date, instead of lower-cost Parcel Post which does not offer tracking and you never know when you will get your shipment. The additional cost for the better service is nominal. We ship worldwide.

Feedback Policy:  We are in the business of keeping customers happy above all reasonable costs, but we are also human.  If you feel your experience with us has been less than exemplary, please contact us and we will try our hardest to keep you a happy, loyal, repeat customer.  Feedback is final, once given it cannot be taken back. If you change you mind about buying a product, before we ship, we will gladly cancel the transaction rather than report you as an non-paying bidder. Likewise, please contact us before giving us negative feedback. We will make things right.

Affiliations:  We are proud members of the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Specialty Coffee Association of Bolivia.  We are also proud members of Cup of Excellence®.

Please note that this roaster is for American electricity (110 volts, 60 Hz). It will not perform well with an electrical transformer. If you need roasters for European/Asian/South American electricity (220 volts , 50hz), we have the 230-volts models available for the FreshRoast8 and the Hearthware I-Roast2 and the Gene Cafe. Please check our other auctions or contact us for more details.
