THIS BOOK IS NEARLY 7 DECADES OLD Trelawny was a handsome, dashing, quixotic, romantic and controversial personality and has been described as being everything from a hero to a downright liar and cad. He claims his childhood was a miserable one. In 1805, His father enrolled Trelawny in the Royal Navy when he was just shy of his 13th birthday. At that time, tradition required the younger sons of the gentry to choose the military as a profession. He himself states he was a deserter and sought adventure while sailing the Indian Ocean. In fact, in 1812 he was honorably discharged (without a commission) after serving 7 years with the Navy.
