Hypermodern Cooking with the Volcano

The Volcano is the newest appliance to enter the kitchens of some of the world's most renowned restaurants. "Chefs have discovered that the Volcano Vaporizer is the premier instrument for enhancing the delicate balance of flavors in cuisine using aroma vapor" said a Storz and Bickel wholesaler.  

Aromatization is the process of using vapor to add flavor or aroma to food. The Volcano produces the purest vapors while minimizing any bitter or unpleasant flavors. It gently releases aromas and scents from a wide array of spices, potpourri style plant materials, or incenses.

The Volcano releases the pure aromatic essence of the spice or other essential oils or plant materials, which can potentially be used for a wide variety of applications from flavoring foods to creating aroma's for ambience. The unique feature of the Volcano in these applications is the purity of vapor transferred. Material is never burned, it is vaporized, and other devices can't produce the same level of purity.

Spice laden vapor fills a bag fresh off the Volcano, and then the food is placed into the bag, sealed and cooked. One of the more basic uses of the Volcano is known as "cooking with oven hose".  A tasty example of a dish enhanced with a pure aroma is crabmeat aromatized with thyme.

Another method is to use a large bell shaped cover, which is placed over the food after vapor is dispersed under the cover. This presentation uses the Volcano to simply supply an initial aroma for the patron as the cover is lifted from the plate when the dish is served to the customer. Properly done, the vapor teases and then adds to the initial presentation experience.

Finally, the Aroma Pillow is a technique made famous at the restaurant Alinea in Chicago. Chef Grant Achatz fills a bag with vapor from the Volcano and places the dish directly on the pillow. Just as the meal is served, small wholes are poked in the pillow. As the customer enjoys, the aroma from the pillow is slowly dispersed through the tiny holes adding an aroma experience that lasts throughout the meal.

Volcano Vaporizer Technology

One of the biggest health factors with smoking or incensing is that smoke contains harmful carcinogenic tar. The Volcano not only removes most of the tar and smoke, it also transfers more of the active ingredients.

Because the smoke particulates are largely nonexistent, and only virtually transparent vapor remains, first time users often are perplexed by this system.

The primary requirement of a vaporizer is the capacity to maintain the temperature of a hot air stream just above the point of vaporization in order to obtain an optimum level of both efficiency and flavor or aroma, along with minimized production of harmful substances. Other important factors are the greatest level of safety for the user and ease of operation.

The Volcano solves the problem of hot air generation by employing an astoundingly simple principle: the air is pumped through a large heating block and then through a smaller channel and with the right air flow and dimensions, the Volcano inevitably assumes a constant flow of the desired temperature. A diaphragm pump ensures that the airflow remains constant, and volumetric flow fluctuations are ruled out with careful design. 

This functions so effectively that electronic controls can be dispensed with. A bimetallic control mechanism is sufficient to ensure a maximum air temperature fluctuation of +-4ãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚â°C in the filling chamber with the "workhorse" Volcano Classic. This means that the Volcano has the most accurate temperature control of all vaporizers.

The Volcano comes in two variations. The "Classic" and the "Digit". The new Volcano Digit uses the same set-up as the Classic. The difference is that a specially made digital integrated electronic control allows for the fastest possible response from the heating element, so it holds a temperature range of +-1.5 ° vs. the +- 4° (Centigrade) for the Classic. The Digit also has an LED readout, which shows the actual temperatures, whereas the Classic does not have a temperature readout. Instead the Classic uses an analogue dial with bimetal regulator. The user must refer to a temperature table to "figure-out" the actual temperature.

The complete electric set-up of the Volcano has been kept as simple and robust as possible, and only proven components are used to ensure an unproblematic reliable operation and a long life of the product.

A main distinguishing feature of the Volcano is the patented valve balloon into which the vapor is pumped. The valve balloon can be completely detached from the device after filling and the contents inhaled at the user's ease. This ensures that the application is absolutely safe, as vaporization occurs previously and the user does not come into contact with glass, heat or electricity during inhalation. 

This device is manufactured in Tuttlingen, a town in Southern Germany, which is regarded internationally as a center of medical technology. The know-how in the area of medical technology that is available in this town has already been utilized in the development phase of the Volcano and makes this vaporizer the first choice for discerning users.

The Volcano is designed to heat material to temperatures of 130° to 446 ° F) where medically active vapors are produced, but below the threshold of combustion where smoke is formed. 

In tests, the vapors from the Volcano have always been found to consist overwhelmingly of the major active components, whereas combusted smoke contains over 100 other additional chemicals, including several poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, toxins that are common in smoke.

One intriguing, underlying question that helps fuel development of Vaporizers is whether the respiratory hazards of smoke are primarily due to toxic byproducts of combustion, not the active ingredients in the material vaporized. The early studies suggest that many of the respiratory hazards of smoking tobacco, for example, can be eliminated with the Volcano. 

The Volcano appears to significantly reduce many of the hazards vs., smoking tobacco, but more studies are needed to clearly understand hazards of using tobacco in the Volcano vs. smoking tobacco. No claims are made as to the advisability or safety of using tobacco or any other substance in the Volcano.

Considering preliminary studies and experience, a vaporizer with characteristics of the Volcano may also eventually represent a superior alternative to the nicotine patch, although study of this application has never sustained any momentum. The Volcano removes many potentially addictive compounds from smoke and it is potentially a bridge to curtailing smoking and tobacco in much the same way that a nicotine path is used as part of a "stepping-stone" approach to quitting smoking.

Following studies conducted in recent years, manufacturer of the device - Storz & Bickel - suggests vaporizing herbal alternatives such as sage leaves (salvia officinalis), hops cones (humulus lupulus), and the flowers of chamomile (matriarca chamomilla). The Volcano may reduce harmful toxins from smoke, as well as reduce potential toxins from a wide variety of other medicinal and herbal substances. However only recently have studies analyzed the gas phase of the vapor for a wide range of toxins from various types of plants. Research is therefore only in its fundamental stages.
