Information on Asbestos in this Book:
  • Discussion of the latent period of possibly 30 years before cancer growth in individuals exposed to long-fibered asbestos.
  • Table lists asbestos as the cause for lung, pleural, and peritoneal mesothelioma cancers. The occupations listed are miners, millers, textile,  insulation, and shipyard workers. [See picture of table below]
  • Section on "Lung Cancer as Influenced by Asbestos Exposure and Smoking Behavior"   References a study that concluded that "an asbestos worker who smoked cigarettes had 92 times the risk of dying of lung cancer, as compared with like individuals who did not smoke cigarettes."  Also larger studies determined that "cigarette-smoking asbestos workers have approximately 8 to 12 times more risk of developing lung cancer as compared with nonsmoking asbestos workers."
  • It also says, "In numerous groups of asbestos workers, approximately 20 percent of all deaths are caused by lung cancers.
