Detailed item info
Synopsis
A white college teacher (nameless) from New Hampshire with an obsession for Jamaican culture travels to the island to write a novel. Once there, however, he becomes immersed in the place and begins to neglect his work for the fascinations of the people. He also neglects his family, who desert him, leaving him alone to pursue his passions. In the course of telling his story, Russell Banks provides a trove of information about Jamaica, including not only voodoo and reggae but the landscape and the group of mountain people known as Maroons, who grow the potent marijuana with which the hero also becomes familiar. He remains an outsider, however, and, like so many of Banks's protagonists, is unable to escape his own nature.

Industry reviews
"...The truly excellent novel you can buy at your corner bookstore right now is 'The Book of Jamaica' by Russell Banks...A powerful testament to human nature, alternating creative and destructive forces...Banks is a master of the techniques that make people want to read novels...Those morbidly fascinating little twists of human existence are all here: love and sex, life and death, beauty and horror--the works."
