Recording information: Issue Project Room (2007); Empty Bottle (2007); Soundlab (2007). In 1977, minimalist composer Rhys Chatham unveiled "Guitar Trio," an instant no-wave classic that prefigured the rise of indie rock artists such as Sonic Youth and Husker Du. On roughly its 30th snniversary, Chatham set out on a U.S. tour where various fans and friends joined him on guitar for improvisations on his signature work. GUITAR TRIO IS MY LIFE! chronicles that 2007 tour city by city, starting in Brooklyn, where _ of Sonic Youth join Chatham on guitar. The thorough box set is testament to the power of a simple repetitive riff, while also playing tribute to the amorphous nature of this very specific and unique composition.
The Wire (p.45) - "[T]he diversity of approaches is striking....The recordings capture the different acoustics of the venues well, and surprisingly different combinations of overtones result in each version."
