In the 1890s several U.S. newspapers featured weekly comic drawings that were funny, but without indicated speech. In 1897, the New York Journal featured humorous strips containing words that were presumably spoken by the characters. Soon speeches in balloons appeared in other cartoons, arranged in a series to form a strip. The comic strip arrived at its maturity in 1907 when the comic strip Mutt and Jeff appeared daily in the San Francisco Chronicle.  The first true comic books were marketed in the U.S. in 1933 as giveaway advertising premiums. By 1935 reprints of newspaper strips and comic books with original stories were selling in large quantities. During World War II, comics dealing with war and crime were popular among soldiers stationed abroad.  In the 1950s comic books were blamed for juvenile delinquency, and the industry responded with self-censorship.
