Al Green is one of the many soul singers, including Solomon Burke, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, who forged their respective styles by combining the sanctified fervor of gospel with the secular, urban swagger of R & B. Green, one of the finest of the smooth soul balladeers of the '70s, in devoting himself to his church, is preserving and revitalizing the classic tradition.
Though the subject matter on these '80s recordings is God and faith, the songs are in the same grooves as '70s Marvin Gaye, Philly soul, and the lean, loping, blues-tinged grooves of Southern soul. Green sounds as committed and suave as in his '70s heyday, while the bass pops, and guitar and keyboards provide a shimmering backdrop. Though this is a compilation, GREATEST GOSPEL HITS stands with Green's classics CALL ME and THE BELLE ALBUM as a fine example of his artistry.
