This beautiful house mask was made by the Palembei tribe from the mid-Sepic River region of Papua New Guinea. This type of mask was hung on the interior or exterior of a house in order to ward off evil spirits. It was originally a part of the Ed Boylan collection. It was carved from hardwood and painted with spiral facial markings which identify the tribe that made it. Measures: 14" high; 6"wide; 2.5'deep. This is a rare tribal object from Oceania.
