1840 OLDE CURIOSITY SHOP b CHARLES DICKENS HARDCOVER

OLD CURIOSITY SHOP,  MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK, was first published as a serial, and as each episode was published, it was eagerly awaited.

In fact, when the final chapter was released, a ship from England was mobbed by hysterical Americans, wanting to know if Nell, the heroine, died at the end....something like the Harry Potter book hysteria of today.

It was, however, not well received by many famous authors of the time, but the public loved it.

This book has been rebound, but some of the 'new' covering has come off in small areas, as you can see in the photographs. It is still intact, no loose pages, some foxing on the front pages, but no rips or tears.

The page edges are roughly cut.

It still retains its leather spine with the gilt  title OLD CURIOSITY SHOP; there is a small burn mark on the spine.

The story of 'MASTER HUMPHRY'S CLOCK'  was a melodramtic tale of the orphan Nell, and her grandfather.

It was published in London by CHAPMAN AND HALL, 186, STRAND with illustrations by GEORGE CATTERMOLE and HABLOT BROWNE.

The date is MDCCCXL (1840).

We got this book years ago with some other wonderful old books, some were rebound before we got them with similar marble binding.

Other than a very slight separation of the front cover (see photo), it's in good condition.
