Album notes
SUPERNATURAL FAIRY TALES is a box set of five CDs covering progressive rock from from 1967 to 1976.
Includes a 64-page booklet with track-by-track annotations by Gary Peterson and Michael Johnson and liner notes by Steve Hochman, Thomas Koppel, Klaus Schulze, Manuel Gottsching, Gilbert Artman, Chris Karrer and Peter Leopold.
It was only a matter of time, in these retro-crazy days, before the prog-rock revival reared its bearded head. What's striking about this collection is how little most of the material has to do with the common conception of twinkle-toed, fairy-booted pretension frequently applied to the genre. The German band Faust's "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl" could be the Velvet Underground on holiday in Berlin. Lard Free's discordantly jazzy "Warinobaril" could be an outtake from the first Lounge Lizards album.
While many well-known proggers like Yes, Genesis and ELP are represented on these 5 discs, much of SUPERNATURAL FAIRY TALES is taken up with the work of more obscure European bands (Frank Zappa is the lone Yank here). And bands like Supersister, Clearlight, Quiet Sun and Rare Bird all carry the art-rock banner with pride. Overall, this impressively-annotated box set is representative of a time when musicians were willing to go to great lengths to realize ambitious visions.

Editorial reviews
4 Stars (out of 5) - ...a wonderful, eccentric collection of weird, hairy music from the obvious--ELP, Genesis, Gentle Giant--to the more obscure--Magma, Seventh Wave and France's delightfully named Lard Free--that will keep you amused for hours...
Q  (11/01/1996)

6 (out of 10) - ...the proggers were less foolish than foolhardy....Though prog is often condemned as bringing a stuffy formalism to rock, in the wasteland of the '70s it was, for teenagers, the only sort of audaciousness around until punk and rap came along...
Spin  (11/01/1996)

3.5 Stars (out of 5) - ...Geared for hash pipes, headphones and quadraphonic speakers, progressive rock was impressionist painting on wax....daring to wrap up entire alternate universes within a 10-minute song...
